the ending of MK9 was a total cliff-hanger.

Well it couldve ended there with Johnny Cage and Sonya and the world saved.
This kinda takes place after 20 something years I think and Cage and Sonya's daughter will be one of the chacters.
No, wrong part. It's when Quan Chi is taking to this spirit or something and he says he'll take over the earth realm himself.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that part.

The "spirit" in question is called Shinnok and he is a former Elder God that resides in the netherrealm. He was the main baddy in MK4.

I'm not really that good in the MK lore.
I only showed interest with MK now because the better fighting mechanics in MK9 and Gods Among Us.
